Mary Murphy also known as "Polly" Murphy was from Elbert Co. GA. She came to Cherokee County NC in the late 1820's where she met Kowsteeneestah a Cherokee indian also known to the white people as "Whiplash". they had three sons named David, Jesse and Martin. The sons took their mother's last name Murphy. It was Cherokee custom that children belong to their mother and went by her clan* name *(last name).
